Alan and Pam May, Orphan Ministry in Eldoret, Kenya
Alan and Pam followed God’s leading to Kenya, East Africa, in 2005. They established a children’s home, The Haven, to care for 21 orphaned and abandoned children. Godly parents, nutritious food, a nice home, adequate clothing, medical attention, biblical training and school uniforms for a public education have been provided by God through many generous supporters.
Alan and Pam have partnered with a well-respected Kenyan ministry, Global Field Evangelism, under the leadership of Ben and Mary Bahati. The Bahatis and GFE have other orphanages under their ministry, including Fresh Start, a home for 24 orphaned and abandoned girls. The Haven and Fresh Start children attend school and church together, and they come together every Thursday evening as a “home cell group”. The children are actively involved in Bible study and worship. Some of the teenagers have already begun to develop ministries of their own. Juliet teaches the Bible. Allan writes and sings worship songs. Several kids participate in GFE’s evangelistic crusade ministry. All of the children sing and dance in the local church.
The May’s have trained, equipped and encouraged Kenyan believers to minister without depending upon their long term presence in Eldoret. This strategy has proven very prudent in light of the recent state of civil unrest and ethnic cleansing which followed a flawed election at the end of December 2007. The children’s ministry continues whether or not Alan and Pam are on site.
The ministry is growing with a current construction project to build two dormitories and a dining hall. When completed, the new orphanage will have the capacity to house 128 children and the necessary number of caregivers for so many children. The plan is to relocate the children of The Haven and those of Fresh Start to the new home. There will be room to house 83 additional children!
The Mays and the Bahatis have a shared vision for the future to establish a school near the orphanage so the children’s education can be ensured. Currently, the public educational system is inadequate.
Please consider partnering with the Mays and Bahatis in their ministry to care for orphaned and abandoned children in the HIV/AIDS - ridden area of East Africa. There is an ongoing and growing need for financial support to keep the children housed, fed and clothed. The Mays and Bahatis have other financial needs to support their efforts to reach and serve the African community who desperately need to know the true and living God, Who alone is worthy of our worship.
There are many things you as an individual or as a small group can do to help support the Mays and the children:
a) Prayer. The single most important thing you can do is pray! They welcome adding more people to their prayer request email. To sign up to receive their prayer requests, just send an e-mail note to . They covet all the prayer they can get!
b) They welcome help spreading the word to others who may be interested in supporting such a ministry. Invite them to speak in your small group!
c) The children love to have visitors. There is always construction work, medical, dental, prayer walking, VBS, etc. that could be done, and the May’s African partners are very experienced at hosting mission teams.
d) Financial support is needed for…
- Child Sponsorship
- Annual Children’s Camp
- Christmas
- Construction (playground, new school, etc.)
- Mini-bus
