Welcome Team

Dear Living Hopers-

I hope you are enjoying the beginning of your summer and will find opportunities to grow in your walk during these months. I would like to ask you to consider doing something this next year that will assist in allowing Living Hope to be the church God has called us to be. From our very beginning four years ago, we have said that on Sunday mornings we will be a church that ‘serves an hour and worships an hour.’ I want to take this time to thank many of you that are doing just that and have been faithfully volunteering since the beginning! My heart is so grateful for all of you. Yet there are still many of us that have not taken that step to ‘serve an hour.’ One possible reason is that as your church leaders we have not effectively communicated the opportunities for you to serve on Sunday morning. With the blessing of our elders and staff, Brad Cummins and Brent Meador have taken the initiative to provide all of us a list of opportunities to serve for the next year. Will you please take time to read and pray over these opportunities? Your leadership is praying that if you have not already done so, that each one of us will take that step and volunteer to serve for one service, one Sunday a month for the next year and live out our desire at Living Hope to ‘serve an hour and worship an hour.’ I’m so grateful for all that God is doing at Living Hope!

Lambuth or bust!

June 15, 2010

Can it possibly be that we have only been at camp 24 hours?  How can that be since we are already  immersed in everything camp?   So what has happened in the last 24 hours?  We’ve moved into dorms (the girls twice – another Lambuth dorm story!), took the camp picture, met the camp pastor, band leader, spent time in private devotion, had church time, ate two meals, TOOK SHOWERS, gone to two Bible studies, had two Worship services, met new friends, sweated in recreation, cleaned our rooms, and now we are off to track times.  In other words the last 24 hours have been packed with fun, fun, fun, and learning about God!!  So, what have you done in the last 24 hours?  Check out the pictures to see for yourselves what we have been up to!

Don’t Forget to Pray!

June 13, 2010

After my sermon in the first service today, I was reminded by a parent at Living Hope about our calling as parents to disciple our children. As we studied Acts this morning, we were reminded of the ways in which the apostles established the church through “gospeling the city” and “strengthening the souls of the disciples” by encouraging them in “the faith” (Acts 14:21-22).
As our youth and children embark on spiritual ventures this week (trailblazers/camp) we must continue to pray for them. As they press into the realities of our city, the truth of the Gospel, and the community God has given them, we pray that their souls would be strengthened as well. Our calling as parents is to raise our children to be faithful disciples of Jesus. It is a tremendous blessing to be a part of a church like Living Hope, with pastors like Greg and Anita, who take their callings seriously; to assist parents in teaching our children the faith. As our youth and children encounter Christ this week, join me in praying that they will “continue in the grace of God” (Acts 13:43).

Summer Reading

June 8, 2010

From time to time I get asked what I have been reading or if I have any books I could recommend. I wanted to toss out a few recommendations of some books that I have recently finished in case some of you are still looking for a good read this summer.

The Gospel Driven Life by Michael Horton. Horton does a fantastic job of articulating the power of the Gospel to direct all of our lives toward holiness and grace. If you want a rich understanding of how  the Gospel shapes all of life, this is a great read.

Perfect Rigor by Masha Geesen. This book chronicles the life of Russian mathematician Grigori Perelman and how he solved one of the greatest problems of the 20th century. This book is sort of a “Good Will Hunting” type . If you like that sort of thing, you may like this book.

To Change the World by James Davidson Hunter. If you’ve ever aspired to “changing the world”, this book is a must read. Hunter is a sociologist, so he can be a bit technical, but his overall thesis will, in my opinion, change the way that we attempt to “change the world”.

The Trellis and the Vine by Colin Marshall. A great book that articulates, in many ways, the pattern of ministry at Living Hope.

My upcoming list includes; A Biblical Theology of the Temple and Surprised by Grace. Let me know if you read any of these, I’d love to hear your feedback.
